I think a form of "gathering" is "pushing" and in the image below, it seems the dead creatures are being pushed with "knuckles" to show the extremely hard work it took to gather all the creatures and pulling and pushing them into the place of their final destination.  Again and again I say they are "memorials" to creatures lost when mars lost it's atmosphere and the surface of their planet destroyed in the extreme past!

Again, time after time after time I say: "The martians are making sculptured memorials to the lose of  their beloved creatures!

Though I don't think the material they use is like granite, marble etc. I think they seem to be a type of canvas that can be turned into 3 dimensional sculptures, and in many cases with figurines and diorama like qualities.  But martians seem to tell elaborate stories with them, unlike any other culture I've ever studied including our own!
